How to read a certificate of analysis
A certificate of analysis (COA) is a testing laboratory’s report on a specific batch. It is the most important trust signal in this category and also the most misread. Here is what the common tests show, what a certificate can and cannot establish, and how to confirm one independently.
HPLC
How much — purity
High-performance liquid chromatography separates a sample into its components. The tall main peak is the target compound; smaller satellite peaks are related impurities. The purity figure is the main peak’s share of the total. A chromatogram that looks “too perfect” — a single spike with a dead-flat, noiseless baseline — is a documented red flag rather than a reassurance.
Mass spectrometry
What it is — identity
Mass spectrometry (MS) confirms the sample’s molecular mass matches the expected compound. Purity tells you how much of the sample is the main component; MS tells you whether that component is the molecule the label names. A purity number with no identity confirmation is only half of the picture.
Contaminant panels
How clean — safety-adjacent
Sterility, bacterial endotoxin, and heavy-metal screens describe how clean the material is — a separate question from purity. They are rare in this category, so their presence on a certificate is a meaningful differentiator, and their absence is simply information the document does not cover.
What a certificate does not prove
- It certifies the tested sample from one batch. It says nothing about the vial in your hand unless the lot on the vial matches the lot on the certificate.
- It is a laboratory measurement, not a safety clearance or an approval for any particular use. These are research reference materials.
- A purity figure with no stated method, or an identity claim with no MS trace, is incomplete — note what is measured, and how.
- A PDF from any seller can be edited, or borrowed from an unrelated batch. A certificate is only as trustworthy as its independent verification.
How to verify a lot independently
Match the lot on the vial to the certificate
Read the lot code printed on the physical vial and confirm it matches the certificate. If they differ, the certificate tells you nothing about that vial.
Confirm authenticity on the testing lab's own portal
A legitimate certificate can be checked on the testing laboratory’s own server using the report’s task number and unique key (case-sensitive). A document can be forged; a matching record in the lab’s database cannot.
If the portal is down, contact the lab directly
Verification portals occasionally fail. When one does, contact the testing laboratory with the report ID or batch number rather than relying on the seller’s copy alone.
